What is EMDR Accreditation?

What is EMDR Accreditation?

You don’t have to be accredited to practice EMDR therapy—but choosing to become an EMDRAA Accredited Practitioner means you’re committed to the integrity and foundation of EMDR practice —it’s about knowing that your work meets a standard that supports safe, effective care for the people you walk alongside.

EMDR FULL MEMBERSHIP

After achieving Level 1, Level 2 and 10 hours of Consultation with an Accredited EMDR Consultant (these are the requirements of Full Membership of EMDRAA), you are eligible to work towards Accreditation as a practitioner. Please note that Level 1, Level 2 and 10 hours of consultation needs to be achieved within a 2 year time frame to be eligible for full membership.

ACCREDITED EMDR PRACTITIONER

At the heart of EMDRAA’s competency framework is the eight-phase EMDR protocol. To become accredited, you’ll need to demonstrate confidence and competency across all eight phases—and this can only be assessed by an EMDRAA Accredited Consultant.

To apply for Practitioner Accreditation, you’ll need:

  • To have completed an EMDRAA-recognised EMDR training (you can find a list of EMDRAA Accredited Trainers at: www.emdraa.org)

  • At least 12 months of clinical practice since finishing basic training.

  • A minimum of 50 EMDR sessions with at least 25 different clients.

  • At least 10 hours of consultation with an EMDRAA Accredited Consultant (this includes reviewing your clinical work—live or recorded).

  • Two professional references: one from your Consultant, and one from a colleague or supervisor who knows your work.

  • Proof of current EMDRAA membership.

For those wanting to step into the role of Consultant, the path continues.

Consultants hold a crucial space in the EMDR community. You are not only supporting other therapists to grow and deepen their practice, but also support quality EMDR service provision to our clients and community. This role asks for more than experience—it asks for presence, reflection, and a commitment to providing consultation to others.

ACCREDITED EMDR CONSULTANT

To become an EMDRAA Accredited Consultant, you’ll need to demonstrate:

  • Depth and breadth in your clinical experience—working with a wide range of client presentations and complexity.

  • A minimum of 300 EMDR sessions across at least 75 clients.

  • At least 20 hours of EMDR-specific consultation or supervision you’ve provided to others.

  • Ongoing participation in your own consultation/supervision for your EMDR work.

  • At least 30 hours of EMDR-specific CPD since becoming an Accredited Practitioner.

  • Submission of at least three examples of your EMDR work (either recorded sessions or in-person observations), including an individual and a group consultation session.
